1 Sept - Bampton Grange to Orton

After 8 days of walking we have everything down pat with the preparation of each day. Every morning I feel I'm getting ready for snow ski-Ing as I put on my boots! The feet are tended to with extra taping on suspected red areas. I have had 1 blister, a beauty, since day 4 on a toe which the compete is cushioning very well.
Today Bon, Jill and Mike said goodbye as we walked off through a paddock heading for the moors and Orton. They caught a taxi to Penrith and hired cars - Bon headed for Windemere and onto her relies and Jill and Mike went to Hawes and onto York.
A farmer whom we had met last night had advised us that he was a 17th generation farmer, all of whom lived in Bampton Grange. The sheep (Hardwicks) are also similar in that they return to their birth place if relocated.
Today was a reasonably easy walk of 18 Kms with a few climbs, going over many narrow stiles, muddy marshes and through beautiful heather as far as the eye could see. Their were many bunnies seen with their white tails darting about. Also many dead ones being preyed upon by badgers, stoats and eagles.
We finally came across the pig looking sheep called texall sheep. There was a funny moment when Michael, Crow and Ronnie walked across a green patch and sank past their ankles!
150 metres from our destination of the George Hotel in Orton the rain started, followed by hail with very little warning. No, our wet weather gear was not on! The 1st beer went down a treat then at 1700 we left Crow and Cherry at The George where they were staying in search for The Barn House, our accommodation for a rest, washing, catching up on emails and the blog! Finally decent wifi after a few days.
We are slowly going through similar pub food meals at night with a slight variation in each. Tonight I had a delicious fish pie (no seafood)! Gammon steak a specialty here was tried and enjoyed, pizza, steak and ale pie, and lamb shanks all delicious. We have learnt after last night not to have steak anymore.

Last group photo before Bon, Jill and Mike leave for Penrith.

The 1st of many stiles today.

Narrow exits in the rocks to negotiate.

Another path all so varied.

Re checking directions.

In Shap after our morning tea break of scones and jam.

Houses are over 300 years old.

Our peace was broken when we had to walk over the M6 motorway.

Some signage.

This grove of trees were all by themselves.

Amongst beautiful heather.

Many a stone wall to follow.

Through farms.

Didn't have to cross as much water today.

Not far from our accommodation and the hail appeared without warning!

The pub Cherry and Crow stayed in. We were up the road in a B&B.

Very relaxed now after a good day of walking.

Even more relaxed after soaking in baths and showers. Pre dinner drinks - again!

31 August - Patterdale to Bampton Grange

We decided to do a small boat trip before our walk started on Ullswater Lake.
Today we decided to take one of Wainwright's alternative routes due to very painful knees etc. The trek took us over a smaller range through Cockpit Stones (Cumbria's Stonehenge) then over rolling hills and on into Bampton (only pub had been closed 3 years ago) then onto our destination, the Crown & Mitre in Bampton Grange.
This was the last night with the short course party of Bon, Jill and Mike. A farewell dinner and a few speeches then our entertainment Director (Bon) put the music on and the dancing started. Bon matched up beautifully with a local lad with a slightly unusual haircut. Michael had sacked the fines master and David was given the job, resulting in a lot more fines for minor indescrections.

Group photo outside Oldwater View Inn.

Collecting lunches at the general store. We are heading for the hill/mountain in the background.

Walking to the lake for a quick trip on the ferry.

Ullswater Lake - stunning.

BM&Y.

Checking the correct route we will take after our ferry trip.

Dave letting cyclists through the gate.

Old buildings everywhere.

Bridge into Bampton Grange.

Crown and Mitre our accommodation. Had a great bar area and the Youngs and Macs got the large front rooms!

The President making speeches and presenting Bon, Jill and Mike with their farewell awards.

New fines master doing his stuff.

Wines and beers started to kick in.
