23 August - Girvan - Pooley Bridge

Woke up to a sunny Sunday morning. It rained very heavily last night. Decided not to play golf today as we have a few miles to cover getting to Pooley Bridge near Penrith just over the Scotish border.
Everything is measured in lbs and ounces, inches and miles, currency is pounds and yet fuel is in litres.
(£1.60/Lt), thus $3.20!
We are very lucky to be able to squeeze into Dave and Ang's hire car with cases between us.
Drove down winding roads with green rolling hills around us. The fences here are of stone or hedges. The pastures very lush with abundant cattle and sheep. Many crops of beans, potatoes and wheat.
Trip took us through Newton Stuart and Dumphries where we had to manoeuvre our way through a large road diversion. Finally calling into Gretna Green which has become very commercialised, cars and tourist buses in droves so didn't stay long. On to Gretna for a coffee stop in a quaint pub then onto Penrith. Goodbye Scotland driving over the border at 1515 into Cumbria, England.
Pooley Bridge has many little English pubs - we stayed at Sun Inn.
Ang decided on a run and we set out with boots and poles for a 2.5 hr walk. We got a taste of how to get lost and what is ahead of us on the C2C which we start in St Bees on Tuesday. Beautiful country side.

View from our bedroom window at Woodlands Bay Hotel.

Re doing our vows???

Going over the Newton Stewart bridge.

Love all these chimneys.

Off we go on our 2.5 hr walk.

These are hundreds of campers settling on farmers plots paying £22/ night!  The farmer puts the lot in his pocket.

No we didn't climb that "hill".

Following the "fell" (the side of the mountain).

This is a "love gate".

A well earned drink at 1830.

Our accommodation in Pooley Bridge.

No we didn't eat it all! Their servings are huge. Have to get use to this pub food! We have brekky then nothing till dinner.
