24 August - Pooley Bridge - St Bees

Woke to another sunny but cool day. Packed the car (M & my luggage between us) and started our drive to St Bees on the west coast via Keswick. Here I decided I might need another inhaler but found a prescription is needed here!
Off to the clinic to register as a "temporary patient" to enable the doctor to issue me a new inhaler, sight unseen and £12 later I headed back to the chemist. My preventative inhaler  would cost £39 = $79! They are about $18 at home so decided I had enough. Thankfully the ventolin was the same as home. Coffee and Dave had time to make a few more purchases for the walk!
The Lakes District is beautiful. Drove passed more farms with paddocks decorated with varying sized tents with holiday campers. We were told they open 9 months a year and at 500 tents in a paddock @ a minimum of £22/day they are making a fortune. Many of these farms also have public footpaths for walkers.
Arrived at St Bees to our charming Abbey Farm B&B at 1400 and settled in. Cherry, Crow and Katherine (who came for the night) arrived then the girls joined Ang and I for a delightful walk along the beach and back into town over 3.5kms. Di and Ronnie, Bon, Jill and Mike arrived by train from Edinburgh at 1600.
Great gathering (11) at dinner all saying we won't drink too much? Famous last words!
Michael gave opening greetings and conducted selection procedures to fill the important job portfolios needed for our walk (ie: fines master, ministers for finance, health, climate, wine, communication, entertainment and of course the most important photographer etc) whilst maintaining dictatorship for himself. A good night had by all.

Have the packing down to a fine art by now.

Keswick coffee stop and a viewing of Dave's purchases!

St Bees school

This school was founded in1583. The original private school building is on the left and the other two wings were built in 1844.

Abbey Farm B&B.

Heading off for our walk without Millie the dog.

We walk around this cliff face on the start of our walk tomorrow.

Jan, Ang and Cherry.

Oldest house in St Bees.

West door of St Bees Priory.

The St Bees Man is the name given to a well preserved body of a medievil knights body which was discovered in the grounds of the St Bees Priory in 1981, during an archeological dig. The gentleman pictured who happened to be leaving a funeral was the chap who discovered him.

Pre dinner drinks.

Katherine stayed the night.

Which wine tonight?

Ang is Minister for Finance.
